What are Distortions?

Distortions arrived with Destiny 2 update 9.7.0 (Monument of Triumph). Bungie describes them as a higher level of challenge on patrol destinations, with unique rewards while they are active. In-game, the active destination and time remaining are marked on the Destinations screen.

The hourly cycle

• One destination at a time. Only a single patrol zone is distorted each hour.
• Rotates every hour. When the timer ends, Distortion moves to the next destination in the rotation.
• Seven patrol zones. A full cycle through all seven destinations takes seven hours, then repeats.
• Not every Director node. Destinations like Kepler, Neptune, or the Tower appear on the map but are not part of this rotation.

Destination loot, reworked

Monument of Triumph revitalized each pre-Edge of Fate destination's loot. Bungie added new perks, tiered weapons for the non-craftable pools, and armor set bonuses themed to each destination. Crafted-weapon destinations also picked up extra perks per column.

The practical takeaway: the gear you want now lives on the destination it fits. A Distortion is the window to farm that destination's refreshed set at a higher tier, so the planet showing here is also telling you which loot pool is hot right now.

Why farm during a Distortion?

Public Events are a strong source of tiered destination gear. During a Distortion, Bungie increases those reward tiers by one step for that destination. For example, base Public Event completions can reach Tier 4 instead of Tier 3, and Heroic completions can reach Tier 5 instead of Tier 4.

That destination's armor sets and other patrol drops also benefit from the higher tier while Distortion is active, so check the map here, then head to the highlighted zone before the hour rolls over.
